IMPORTANT MAINTENANCE PROCESSES

There are some very important processes to managing Turf. Most of these processes get overlooked at the high school level. Topdressing, aerating, vertical mowing/thatch removal, all should be done yearly to help keep the Turf performing safely. One may say that these processes are expensive, but in the long run they will save you money and heart ache of a "mudhole" for a field or the cost of having to renovate the entire field.

Fraze Mowing
Fraze mowing is a process that has spread across the European field maintenance industry. Fraze mowing is simple- using a Koro Field Topmaker, the top layer of the field is removed (1/4-1/2″ down). That removed top layer includes materials that can cause issues with a field…. detrimental build ups from a growing season are annually removed to create a better environment for plant strength and field playability.

Core Aeration
Whether pulling cores or using solid tines, aeration is a crucial tool in Turf Management. Aeration not only incorporates oxygen exchange in the soils but helps increase drainage, relieve compaction, increase root depth, and helps alleviate black layer build up. A combination of coring and solid tine aeration should be utilized throughout the growing season to ensure that the Turf will perform at its highest level.

Topdressing Sand

Topdressing has a ton of benefits:
-cheap and efficient way to increase peculation rates
-helps keep the playing surface smooth and provides a great growing medium for grasses
-can be used as a leveling tool to raise low spots or sink holes by super topdressing, grading, then allowing the grass to come through the sand
-applications before or after aeration incorporate the sand into the soil profile increasing peculation rates, reducing thatch, and increasing pore space for increased drainage
